Aussie Professional Rugby Jocks Fight Homophobia

Ya gotta love the Aussies.

The high-profile muscled jocks of Australia’s national rugby team, the Qantas Wallabies, have joined forces with the country’s largest LGBT-focused health and HIV/AIDS organization for a campaign to fight discrimination against LGBT people.

Team captain Stirling Mortlock and other players were photographed holding handwritten signs championing inclusiveness in sports as part of the This Is Oz campaign, an online photo blog where users can upload photos of themselves with messages that challenge homophobia and celebrate diversity and social inclusion.

Who's that Queer?

Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde (16 October 1854 – 30 November 1900) was a playwright, poet and author of numerous short stories and one novel. Known for his biting wit, he became one of the most successful playwrights of the Victorian Era in London, and one of the greatest celebrities of his day. Several of his works remain popular today, especially The Importance of Being Earnest and The Picture of Dorian Gray. As the result of a widely covered series of trials, Wilde suffered a dramatic downfall and was imprisoned for two years after being convicted of "gross indecency" with other men.

While at Magdalen College, Wilde became particularly well known for his role in the aesthetic and decadent movements. He began wearing his hair long and openly scorning so-called "manly" sports, and began decorating his rooms with peacock feathers, lilies, blue china and other objets d'art. Legends persist that his behaviour cost him a dunking in the River Cherwell in addition to having his rooms (which still survive as student accommodation at his old college) trashed.

Though married with children, Wilde is considered by most historians to be bisexual or homosexual. He had significant sexual relationships with Frank Miles, Robert Baldwin Ross, and Lord Alfred Douglas (known as "Bosie"). Wilde also had numerous sexual encounters with working-class male youths, who were often male prostitutes.

Wilde and Douglas in 1893

In 1895, John Sholto Douglas, 9th Marquess of Queensberry, father of Wilde's lover Lord Alfred Douglas, came to believe his sons had been corrupted by older homosexuals, or as he phrased it in a letter, "Snob Queers like Rosebery." The verbal accusations led Wilde to a file a lawsuit for libel, but ended with Wilde being sent to prison for gross indeceny with other men.

RuPaul Andre Charles
is an American drag performer, singer, actor, and songwriter who gained fame in the 1990s; appearing in a wide variety of television programs, films, and musical albums. Working primarily in a drag queen persona, RuPaul has on occasion performed as a man in a number of roles, usually billed as RuPaul Charles.

In 1993 RuPaul recorded dance/house albums which were released through the hardcore rap label Tommy Boy, spawning the dance track hit "Supermodel (You Better Work)". The music video was an unexpected success on MTV, as grunge-rock and gangsta rap were popular at the time. Shortly thereafter, RuPaul was signed to a modeling contract for MAC cosmetics, making him the first drag queen supermodel. Billboards featured him in full drag with the text "I am the MAC girl." At this time he also released his autobiography, Lettin' It All Hang Out.

In 1996, he landed a talk show of his own on VH1, appropriately called The RuPaul Show, where he interviewed celebrity guests and musical acts. On one notable episode, RuPaul brought gay porn culture to Middle America with featured guests Chi Chi LaRue and Tom Chase.

Recently RuPaul began work on RuPaul's Drag Race, a reality television game show to air on Logo in February 2009. Top drag queens will compete to be selected as the number one drag performer in the country.
