8TH ANNUAL LOVEFEST CELEBRATION

BLACK GAY & BISEXUAL MEN TAKE CONTROL OF THEIR HEALTH AT
8TH ANNUAL LOVEFEST CELEBRATION

Chicago Black Gay Men’s Caucus (CBGMC) to Launch “Healthy Is Sexy” Lifestyle Campaign

Event to Bring Awareness to LGBT Health and Wellness Management

Performance by Legendary Dance Diva Crystal Waters

(Chicago, Illinois – Aug 1, 2012) – The Chicago Black Gay Men’s Caucus (CBGMC), will host the 8th Annual LoveFest Celebration on Sunday, August 26th from 12p – 8p at Jackson Park (63rd & Cornell Drive). A free event, LoveFest is an annual summer “edu-tainment” festival designed for the African-American LGBT community, more specifically gay and bisexual men, to bring awareness to health and wellness management with live entertainment, dancing, health screenings and physical fitness activities. Since 2005, CBGMC has produced LoveFest, which attracts more than 500 attendees each year.

The 8th Annual LoveFest Celebration will serve as the official launch of CBGMC’s “Healthy Is Sexy” (HIS) Lifestyle Campaign, which will consist of advertisements, events, social media interactions, health tools and access points for African American gay and bisexual to become more involved in managing their overall health.

“We are truly excited to launch the Healthy is Sexy Lifestyle Campaign at this year’s Lovefest,” stated Keith Green, CBGMC Chairman. “This campaign will present more opportunities for black gay and bisexual men to take an active role in their overall health which will improve the quality of their lives and in turn create a more healthy community,” he continued.

This year’s theme is Healthy.Sexy.We., which takes cues from the Chicago Department of Public Health’s Healthy Chicago LGBT Community Action Plan. Attendees will be able to enjoy a variety of physical activities in the park including yoga, physical challenge obstacle courses, kickboxing, and volleyball. The Healthy is Sexy (HIS) Lifestyle Health Village will mimic the ideal “health and wellness visit” experience for African American gay and bisexual men – offering free private “Doc Chat” sessions with skilled medical professionals, screenings for HIV/STIs, hepatitis C, diabetes, obesity and a number of other health issues facing men.

Legendary dance diva Crystal Waters and Chicago’s very own Cyon Flare are the event’s featured entertainers. In addition, LoveFest will host the Old School vs. New School Battle of the DJs, and the EGOmania Mini-Ball.

“It’s important that we continue to provide positive affirming environments where black gay and bisexual men can come together and have access to health services,” said Craig Johnson, interim chair of the CBGMC executive planning commission (EPC).

“This festival is an opportunity for the Chicago Black Gay Men’s Caucus to communicate to the Black MSM population the importance of taking control of their health and that with our [CBGMC] assistance we can change the overall health landscape for our community.”

The 8th Annual LoveFest partners include but are not limited to the Illinois Department of Public Health, Chicago Department of Public Health, the University of Chicago Medical Center, Test Positive Aware Network, Public Health Institute of Metropolitan Chicago, the AIDS Foundation of Chicago, Stroger Hospital of Cook County, the CORE Center, Medical Center, Howard Brown Health Center, Access Community Health Network, the Center on Halsted, Perfect Fit., Inc., and Yogatones.

Get Freaky Recap!

via Windy City Times, by Blair Mishleau

Everything from anal cleanliness to the benefits of kissing and cuddling before sex—and many tangents in between—were covered Oct. 25 at "Get Freaky: A sexual health forum for Men who have Sex with Men."

Approximately 50 audience members gathered for the event, held at the Center on Halsted with hosts/bloggers Feast of Fun moderating it.

It was an opportunity for everyone, regardless of sexual orientation, to learn and ask about the parts of sex not covered in health class.

The forum was hosted in conjunction with Project CRYSP and LifeLube, which are both gay men's sexual health projects, as well as the Chicago Black Gay men's Caucus.

The forum is likely the last to be held in the series, which has run four times a year for the last four years, as the grant that funds the program has ended.

"We've covered all different topics," said Jim Pickett, director of prevention advocacy in gay men's health at the AIDS Foundation of Chicago. "We've covered things from alcohol in the gay community to sex online to homophobia to 'what is justice for gay Black men' [ and ] trans rights—we've had a number of topics."

The three "sexpert" panelists included Gary Bucher, an anal-health specialist and director of the Anal Dysplasia Clinic Midwest; Debby Herbenick, a sex researcher and sex columnist for TimeOut Chicago; and John Stryker, a nurse practitioner at the Howard Brown Health Center.

The event started with light snacks, mingling and a series of vendors demonstrating sex toys. The panel commenced after that.

To make the panel more interactive, audience members were given clickers and asked various questions that appeared on-screen, with the audience results appearing in real time.

Some questions asked included preferred position in sex ( top, bottom, versatile, doesn't apply ) . The audience was mostly bottom, followed by versatile and then top.

Other questions asked about anal cleansing, getting tested for HIV and more. Panelists were then called upon to talk about these poll numbers, alongside greater national information.

"We try to make them feel interactive, so people feel engaged and they have the forum they want to have," Pickett said. "It really depends on the people who show up and how they interact with our panellists."
Audience members were also encouraged to ask questions, with topics like HIV prevention, anal douching and the difficulty of finding a boyfriend as gay men, being discussed.

"One of the things we always get criticized for not bringing up is 'how to get yourself a man,'" said co-host Fausto Fernos of Feast of Fun, as he introduced a question from an attendee.

Herbenick, who teaches a sexuality seminar at Indiana University, gave some advice regarding young gays trying to find long-term relationships.

"There's no easy answer, but I do think that young people do want relationships," said Herbenick. "I've been teaching college students for eight years, and I haven't seen that change at all. I think the vast majority of men and women of all orientations talk on and on about wanting relationships.

"That doesn't mean they don't have periods of sexual exploration and that sometimes people want to have one night stand. But ultimately, the majority, if not all of them, really want relationships. I think it's difficult for people to be honest with what they want and to share that."

Chicago Black Gay Men’s Caucus to Host Historic Community Input Forum June 30

It is our hope that this forum will challenge us to take the microscope off of the individual, and really begin to zoom in on the institutions and institutional policies that impact the sexual health of the Black MSM population.

The Policy and Advocacy Committee of the Chicago Black Gay Men’s Caucus (CBGMC), with support from the AIDS Foundation of Chicago (AFC) and the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH), will host an unprecedented Community Input Forum to discuss the development of HIV/STI Prevention and Treatment Guidelines for Black men who have sex with men (MSM) in Chicago during Black Pride Weekend.

A collaborative effort with Chicago Windy City Black Pride and Windy City Black Pride, the forum will be held Wednesday, June 30th from 6p – 8p at the opening receptions of both pride organizations, Club Escape (1530 E. 75th Street) and Sidetrack (3349 N. Halsted), respectively. The forum will simulcast live from both locations to afford attendees the opportunity to participate in an interactive dialogue and witness what is happening at the other via large screen TVs.

“Black Pride Weekend is a key time in the City of Chicago to address and find solutions to issues that are affecting the African American LGBT community,” said Keith Green, chair of the CBGMC Policy and Advocacy Committee.  “We are excited to work with the Black Pride organizations to bring forth this groundbreaking platform on one of the most pressing issues within our community – HIV and STI prevention and treatment.  This is exciting stuff!”

The urgent need to establish HIV/STI Prevention and Treatment Guidelines for Black MSM in Chicago became apparent when, in 2009, the Chicago Department of Public Health released a report that found alarmingly higher rates of HIV in Black MSM compared to White and Latino MSM, despite the fact that there were no differences in how often they used condoms or how regularly they tested for HIV.

“There is obviously something going on at the community level that we as advocates and service providers have not tapped into,” said CBGMC Co-Chair Ariq Cabbler. It is our hope that this forum will challenge us to take the microscope off of the individual, and really begin to zoom in on the institutions and institutional policies that impact the sexual health of the Black MSM population. Though the Guidelines are being developed specifically for providers who encounter and work with Black MSM, they will also be made available to Black MSM through various mediums, to equip these men with information necessary for taking ownership of our own sexual health.”

Confirmed panelists include: Rodney Perkins, RN, MSN (Clinic Coordinator for the Gay Men’s Health and Wellness Clinic at the Whitman Walker Clinic in Washington, DC), Jim Pickett (Director of Advocacy for the AIDS Foundation of Chicago), Anthony Galloway (Prevention Manager at Test Positive Aware Network), Lora Branch, MS (Director of Administration for the Chicago Department of Public Health STI/HIV Division), Beau Gratzer, MPP (Director of Community Health at the Howard Brown Health Center) and “Aruba” Tommy Bennett (Of The Tom Joyner Morning Show and host of “He Say, He Say” on WVON).

[The mission of the Chicago Black Gay Men’s Caucus is to mobilize and empower Black gay men and their allies to identify solutions to prevent new HIV infections by addressing the well-being of Black men who have sex with men. It is a coalition of public and private providers, business owners, club managers, promoters, and community activists dedicated to improving health outcomes for African American gay and bisexual men.]

Keith Boykin to Speak About Justice for Gay Black Men - NEXT WEEK

What does justice look like for Black Gay Men? What is the role of allies?

Renowned television host, author and speaker Keith Boykin headlines the community forum “Justice for All?” to be held January 28, 2010 in Chicago.  The event will take place at the University Center, 525 South State on the second floor.

Doors will open at 6:00 p.m. for appetizers and socializing, and the program will begin promptly at 7:00 p.m.  Admission to the event is free.

Boykin and fellow panelists will address and debate the meaning of justice, past and current efforts to obtain equality, the role of allies, and strategies to bring real and lasting change for Black gay men.

“It's not only important for Black gay men to be cognizant of how we are impacted by our lack of justice, but also, how we too, impact this innate right for others,” stated Boykin, who is affiliated with The Daily Voice, CNBC, and BET.  “Events like these continue to challenge and illuminate this fact."

Joining Boykin on the panel will be E. Patrick Johnson creator of “Sweet Tea: Black Gay Men of the South-An Oral History” and professor at Northwestern University, and Antonio D. Jimenez from the University of Illinois Chicago’s School of Public Health.   The forum will be hosted and moderated by Dr. Keith Magee (National Public Housing Museum) and Jim Pickett (AIDS Foundation of Chicago).

"Black gay men and their allies need to come together to have a real discussion about factors that threaten the wellness of our community," said Anthony Galloway of Test Positive Aware Network, one of the event organizers. "Although potentially controversial, we must explore what 'justice' is and how we can achieve it.  We are excited about the potential impact of this discussion."

A first-time collaboration between the Chicago Black Gay Men’s Caucus, the Communities of Color Collaborative, Project CRYSP and LifeLube.org has organized the forum to recognize Black History Month as well as National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (set for February 7, 2010).  Black gay men, gay men of all colors, and allies are encouraged to attend.
