CDPH Moving To Fill LGBT Health Position

Despite the City of Chicago’s budget crunch, the Chicago Department of Public Health is moving to fill the vacant position of director of the Office of LGBT Health, a CDPH spokesman said July 23.

"We fully understand the importance and support the work of the CDPH LGBT Health Office," CDPH’s Tim Hadac said. "We are moving forward with the process of hiring a director."

The job has been unfilled since its former director, Simone Koehlinger (above), left CDPH June 14, and some in the community have speculated that the City’s budget woes might be why. Those concerns led the Chicago Commission on Human Relations’ Advisory Council on LGBT Issues, whose members are appointed by Mayor Richard M. Daley, to approve a letter July 21 to CDPH Comm. Bechara Choucair urging CDPH to fill the position and continue to support the office.

Who's That Queer [Robert Mapplethorpe]

Brought to you by Pistol Pete

Robert Mapplethorpe
(November 4, 1946 – March 9, 1989) was an American photographer, known for his large-scale, highly stylized black and white portraits, photos of flowers and naked men. The frank, homosexual eroticism of some of the work of his middle period triggered a more general controversy about the public funding of artworks.

Mapplethorpe lived with his partner, musician Patti Smith, from 1967–1974, and she supported him by working in bookstores. They created art together, and even after he realized he was gay they maintained a close relationship. In the 1980s, his mentor and lifetime companion, art curator Sam Wagstaff gave him $500,000 to buy the top-floor loft at 35 West 23rd Street, where he lived and had his shooting space. He kept the Bond Street loft as his darkroom.

Mapplethorpe died in1989 from AIDS. Nearly a year before his death, the ailing Mapplethorpe helped found the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation, Inc. His vision for the Foundation was that it would be "the appropriate vehicle to protect his work, to advance his creative vision, and to promote the causes he cared about". Since his death, the Foundation has not only functioned as his official estate and helped promote his work throughout the world, it has also raised and donated millions of dollars to fund medical research in the fight against AIDS and HIV infection.

How is Jo Jo Steven McClure healthy?

Being healthy to me means consistency.

I am healthy; because I make changes in my daily routine that positively impact my well being. For instance, I acquire most of my daily exercise through small but significant changes in my commute. Instead of taking public transportation or driving my car to work each day I ride my bike instead.

Secondly, I substitute certain foods or completely remove them from my diet one meal at a time. For example, when I go to my favorite fast food restaurants during my lunch break at work instead of ordering the number one as usual I simply get the sandwich coupled with a piece of fresh fruit and maybe a courtesy cup of water.

These minor changes in routine over time have contributed to my good health.

Gay Marriage? It's NOT the Final Frontier

Via The Guardian..

Last month, the European court of human rights ruled that member states are not obliged to allow gay marriage, despite "an emerging consensus towards legal recognition of same-sex couples". Shortly afterward, a federal judge in Massachusetts ruled unconstitutional the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, which forbids the federal government to recognise gay marriages. And then, last week, Argentina became the first Latin American country to legalise gay marriage, granting same-sex couples all the legal rights, responsibilities and protections that marriage brings to heterosexuals.

It is difficult to see how a legal system that claims to take equality before the law seriously can deny marriage equality. Supporters of same-sex marriage regard inclusion into such an important social and legal institution as vital to the citizenship of gay men and lesbians.

But some take issue with this. As they are interested in preserving the diversity of gay relationships, they resist conforming to societal ideals of "normal" relationships. Their concern is that gay culture may perish as gay men and lesbians begin to pursue typical heterosexual norms by getting married and raising children.

Aw, nuts

Scrotal Savvy

All guys, from the age of 15 years, should know how their testicles normally look and feel. Knowing what is normal and reporting any changes to your doctor may help find cancer earlier. Early detection of testicular cancer can make a difference in the treatment of the disease.

How to check your testicles

The best time to check your testicles is just after you’ve had a bath or shower, when the muscles in the scrotum are relaxed, making it easier for you to feel any lumps, growths or tenderness.

Who's That Queer [Gad Beck]

Brought to you by Pistol Pete

Gad Beck (born 1923) is a retired educator, author and gay Holocaust survivor. Beck was born in Berlin along with twin sister Margot, to a Jewish father and German mother who had converted to Judaism.

As a person with a partial Jewish ancestry, Beck was not deported with other German Jews. Instead, he remained in Berlin. He recalls in his autobiography wearing a Hitler Youth uniform into the pre-deportation camp where his lover had been arrested and detained. He asked the commanding officer for the boy's release for use in a construction project, and it was granted. When outside the building, however, the boy declined, saying, "Gad, I can't go with you. My family needs me. If I abandon them now, I could never be free."With that, the two parted without saying goodbye.

He joined an underground effort to supply food and hiding places to Jews escaping to neutral Switzerland. In early 1945, a Jewish spy for the Gestapo betrayed him and some of his underground friends. He was subsequently interrogated and interned in a Jewish transit camp in Berlin.
