India may confront one of its longest held taboos this year, as the film "Dunno Y ... Na Jaane Kyun" threatens to present Bollywood with its first gay kiss.

Due to the film's focus on a gay relationship, many have begun to compare the film to "Brokeback Mountain," and are hoping that the film will challenge prejudice in a similar manner. Despite its size, Bollywood has long been unusually conservative - until recently even heterosexual kissing was considered shocking.

Pakistan: Bollywood flick banned for homosexiness

The High Court in Lahore has issued ban on an Indian film after a petitioner claimed it "propogates homosexuality."

Dostana, which is hyped as Bollywood's first gay-themed comedy, cannot be shown anywhere in Pakistan as a result of Friday's court ruling.

The judge ordered that a copy of the script be prepared for a later hearing and that the Pakistan Film Censor Board should block any screenings.

Dostana is similar in plot to last year's Hollywood effort I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry.

Two Indian men in Miami pretend to be a gay couple to rent an apartment, and later to gain an immigration permit.

The slapstick comedy of errors has a cameo from Big Brother contestant Shilpa Shetty.

There is no actual gay relationship, but the two male leads share a kiss and it is being hailed as a breakthrough in Indian cinema.

LifeLube Crew Back from the Subcontinent

Hello dearest LifeLubers ---- as you know, posting here has been a bit lite the last couple of weeks, as some of our crew were on assignment in Kathmandu, Nepal and New Delhi, India - and points in between.

Now that we are back, we will be sharing some of our pics and experiences over the next few weeks. And there were many - thankfully not totally burned out of our consciousness after enduring the 7 Circles of Hell that was the Indira Ghandi International Airport on our way out of town....

Our last full day there was Friday the 29th, and we decided to go see a Bollywood movie in the afternnon. We wanted to see Om Shanti Om , because we had heard it was a huge, delirious hit and starred our boyfriend Shah Rukh Khan. Alas, it was only playing at one theater that seemed a LONG way away, so we opted for Jodhaa Akbar - which was playing everywhere, and had even been pulled from a number of theaters around the country because people were threatening to burn down the cinemas where it was playing. Seems there was a bit of debate over the historical accuracy of the film. The controversy made it a huge hit, and EVERYONE was talking about it.



Of course, none of the hullabaloo was understandable to us. Nor was it clear to the ticket seller why we wanted to see Jodhaa Akbar, and not some of the many crappy American films showing. 'But, this is a Hindi film," she said. "And that is exactly why we want to see it!" we giggled.

We were frisked and metal-detectored- after having to check our bags and cameras at some weird little sundries kiosk in the plaza outside the cinema - and got into our seats just as the movie started. As it was more of a drama and less crazy singing/dancing than most Bollywood movies, we were basically lost through most of it - but still, the film was sumptuous and lovely to look at, with a delectable morsel of masala (Hrithik Roshan - see upper right of the blog for a pic or two...) in the lead. With all the visuals to keep us mesmerized - and hello, the outfits! - we sorta followed along.

The clip above is the highlight of the movie for us - a gorgeous song with very subtle, beautiful dancing that gives us the chills, whatever it means!

Homosexuals in India have always been vulnerable to crimes because, on approaching the police, they could find themselves booked under a 141-year-old law. Article 377 of the Indian Penal Code declares oral, anal and other non-procreative sex as being “against the order of nature”. So not only do homosexuals have to face persecution from the world, they have to constantly watch out for the law.

This vulnerability came shockingly to the fore when police recently crashed a private party on the ‘tip-off’ that homosexual activities would happen there. Police detained six people on the shocking crime of having stocked snacks, drinks and condoms!In a time when rapes and murders are going unsolved, we hear of a team of police officers planting spies, intercepting traffic and blocking roads to stop a private party!
