In January of this year I was grossly overweight and found myself being diagnosed with Type II diabetes.
My primary care provider stated very emphatically that my A1C (an A1C test shows your average blood sugar level over the past 2 to 3 months) was so high that I could have a stroke. She sent me to a diabetes specialist who put me on two medications to lower my A1C, and warned me that if I didn’t lose weight my health would deteriorate more than it already had.
I began to take Byetta and Medformin and I changed my diet to exclude high fat content foods, high sugar content foods, and caffeine. My family history is full of members that have diabetes who are also on medication but did not change their diets - and are suffering the consequences.
Now after 8 months of change my A1C has been lowered by 2 points and I have lost 58 pounds. Now that I know what and how to eat, adhere to my medication regimen, and incorporating exercise into my routine I believe I am truly living a healthy lifestyle.
