Q&A: An Interview with Porn Star Buck Angel

By Pistol Pete

Buck Angel has taken the world by storm since he first appeared on the adult film industry scene in 2003. According to his website, www.buckangel.com, Buck was the first Female to Male to sign a deal with a mainstream porn company when he partnered with Robert Hill Productions in 2004. In 2005, he also became the first FTM to feature in an all-male porn film produced by an exclusively gay porn company. This was the Titan release Cirque Noir. In January 2007, Angel won Transsexual Performer of the Year at the AVN Awards, the first female-to-male performer to do so. In October 2008 Angel appeared in director Ed Powers' new book NAKED about the adult film industry. He filmed a sex scene with porn star Wolf Hudson for an accompanying documentary film NAKED, produced by mainstream photographer Justin Lubin. (Sources: buckangel.com, wikipedia.org)

PP: Why did you decide to get into the porn industry, and what are the positive things that have come out of your career?

BA: I did it because I wanted to show how a man with a vagina is sexy and can have a great sex life. It is important for me to also show that safe sex is very important in the making of my films. I believe that what I do is also educational and want people to see my work as something very positive. I have also started doing workshops about my work and have been asked to speak at some schools and Universities regarding my impact on human sexuality.

PP: What has the public reaction been to your work?

BA: In the beginning of Buck Angel Entertainment, many FTM guys wrote me very nasty emails telling me that what I was doing was bad for the “FTM community." What they failed to realize was that my work was and is not about the FTM community, it is about “Buck Angel” and my way of dealing with and showing sexual expression. Things have changed but I still get hate mail from more of the old school FTM's who still believe that you need to have a penis to be a man.

PP: You've been through some very tough times before coming out as transgender. How have you been able to remain healthy and stable through all the controversy that surrounds you?

BA: By loving myself first and foremost, learning that I had to take my life into my own hands and not rely on everyone else telling me how I had to be; when I did that I just never felt happy. I had to overcome a very bad drug and alcohol problem which was really the first step. Then I just went to therapy to deal with my gender issues. As I grew as an individual I started feeling stronger about myself. I started working out and getting my body into shape - the kind of male body I always dreamed of - and I believe this also really helped my self esteem. Just live life for yourself and not for anyone else.

PP: Well, you've certainly been a trailblazer, and opened many people's eyes to just how sexy and manly FTMs can be. Thanks for your time and keep up the good work.

BA: Thanks, Pete. WOOF!

  1. Buck is hot hot hot. Proof that there's more to masculinity than how big your dick is or which set of ideals you subscribe to.
