On May 31, most state representatives voted to create massive service disruptions for vulnerable Illinoisans, including people with HIV. Each vote against sensible tax reform was in essence a vote to slash lifesaving state health and human services by 50% or
more. These drastic cuts mean fewer HIV tests, fewer prevention services, and more new cases of HIV/AIDS. People with HIV will become sicker and need even more intensive state services. The budget passed by the General Assembly is neither a political ploy nor an empty threat. The draconian funding cuts will be very real on July 1 if your Illinois representatives do not hear from you today.
With a $7-10 billion state deficit, Illinois cannot cut its way out of this problem. Fair, modest revenue increases through tax reform must be enacted immediately to balance the budget before the fiscal year begins on July 1. Contact your state representative and tell him or her how these cuts affect you.
