I stay healthy by following my joy. Sometimes, my joy is found in the struggle - with my many activist projects. Sometimes, my joy is found in the dungeon - with my hot leather brothers and sisters. Still other times, my joy is found in silence - with nothing but myself, two cushions, and the rise and fall of my breath. Wherever that joy is, you've got to find it.
I stay healthy by seeking balance. This is a tricky thing for those of us who do too much. Learning to say no is a big skill, and it's one on which I still need work. Time management is another biggie. My next goal is to find some hot leather boy to keep my schedule. [Hey, a guy can dream, right?] P.S. There will be perks.
I also stay healthy by loving the body I'm in. Sure, I could get to the gym more often, but as someone who spent two decades and several thousand dollars coming into his manhood, this body is all mine for the keeping. I've got two tattoos so far and a compass scar so I never lose my way. I will eventually be inked to high hell, but for now, I'm content - and the focus then becomes seeing what all I can do with this body I have.
I stay healthy by walking my talk. I talk to people about getting annual exams, trying new things, having the hard conversations, and living a life of integrity and service. It is therefore really important that I make a valiant effort on each of those things myself.
Lastly, I stay healthy by remembering the paths of those who came before me.
Sometimes, when I'm discouraged by the baby steps of progress, I take the time to remember that the arc of the moral universe is long but it bends toward justice, and I take heart in knowing that if we don't get justice today, we'll win it fair and square tomorrow.
