The "Work In" - Patience Does Not Mean “Waiting Out the Storm”

How many of you are struggling with your new year’s resolutions?

Brought to you by Ed Negron, a former drug user, turned gangbanger, turned drug dealer, turned own best customer, turned addict, turned recovering addict (still there), turned activist, turned business manager, turned student, turned Substance Abuse Counselor, turned better and happier person, turned someone who can love and be loved (Love you Patrick), turned blogger. Wow, I can’t believe we are already mid way through the month. Time flies when you’re having fun - or when you’re sitting still. How many of you are struggling with your new year’s resolutions?

Starting something new, different, or starting all over again- like living clean & sober, giving up smoking, or dieting- is no easy task. It’s hard. And if you are telling yourself it isn’t, you are just bullshitting yourself and possibly setting yourself up for failure or relapse. You have to get your mind set ready for the up hill battles. This takes planning and work; hard work. It’s not going to happen overnight. We have to go at it with patience. Don’t give up just yet. That relapse doesn’t mean it’s the end of the world. Work with me and we can all get through this together.

Life has been hard on us, but most of it was made hard by ourselves. However, the hard life has taught us a lot. It strengthened our minds and it broadened our experiences. If we look back at our experiences we will see that patience can/will pull us through the tough times. We can know and fully trust that everything is ok, that our lives are on course, that those individual experiences are exactly what we needed. Patience will slow us down long enough to notice another experience, and to be grateful for the lessons of the moment. Patience promises us the power to move forward with purpose.
Don’t even dust yourself off;
just get up and go.

Let’s talk about patience.

To have patience does not mean to sit back and ride it out. That is a big misconception most people have.

It is the perseverance of getting back up and going at it again. Don’t even dust yourself off; just get up and go. It is not the patience of waiting out a storm - it is the perseverance of moving through a storm to get to where you want to be. It is not waiting to get healed - it is using everything you know and doing everything you can to make the healing happen.

What will give you the strength to persevere in the direction of your dreams and desires, plans and goals, wishes and healing, is the want you have for something that you decide is so important, so valuable, so good, that nothing at all can replace it in your mind and in your heart. If your passion, your want, is strong enough, you will have the strength and determination to keep going in spite of doubt, disappointment, fear, misunderstanding, and all the people who tell you that what you want is impossible.

“In this infinite universe, the only impossibility is whatever you never attempt, and the only failure is when you decide to give up.”
