"I am a marathon runner"

Jason Taylor
, 33, a resident of the South East Side of Chicago in historic Pullman, shares his story.

I was born in Chicago and while growing up I lived above a bar owned by my grandfather and then relocated to Burbank, a suburb of Chicago. I have worked in the printing industry for 16 years and am currently at a local print shop (Print King Inc.).

I believe that one of the biggest assets Chicago has to offer the gay communities is the huge amount of services we can go to for help. I think this is often overlooked or that people simply don’t realize that there is always help, and hope, and it could be just around the corner.

In terms of gay men’s health, one key issue for me that should be addressed is the increasing number of HIV cases. The numbers are still very high and are increasing again. I think that without better education and less apathy the numbers are never going to decrease.

What makes me happiest is being able to help others without expecting anything in return. Another source of happiness for me is going out dancing with friends. I also enjoy running or biking and being outdoors. These things make me feel great! If weather isn’t permitting, I love lounging around the house and relaxing. I’m often busy with The Beverly Theatre Guild or working on a project for the neighborhood.

I’ve found meaning in my life by becoming involved with HIV-related community organizations. I pride myself on learning as much as possible so that I can help spread the information. I consider myself an advocate for the HIV community.

I am a marathon runner, my first run being the Bank of America 8K Shamrock Shuffle this past spring. The adrenaline rush is remarkable. At first running was a way for me to let off steam after learning of my new HIV diagnosis and to commit to a healthier lifestyle. Shortly after starting training I learned of the additional health benefits of returning t-cells and dropping viral loads! My doctor simply said “Whatever you’re doing, keep on doing it!”

I am currently a member of the National AIDS Marathon Training Program which helps runners accomplish their training goals while raising funds for HIV. Last year, I ran in the LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon. On Sunday - YESTERDAY - I ran the Bank of America Chicago Marathon and will also be participating in the Hawaii Marathon on December 14th.

My community interest recently led to my being elected to the AIDS Foundation of Chicago's Junior Board and will be serving on the host committee of AFC’s “World of Chocolate”, tickets now available online or through me.

As for my spirituality, I do believe in God, though I’m not one to attend church regularly. I also believe that a person lives more than one life.

I’m highly inspired by other runners and people who are motivated to find a cure for HIV.
