Making Difficult Ethical Decisions in Psychotherapy

Presented by Maryanne Williams, Psy.D. & Braden Berkey, Psy.D.


Friday, February 22nd

9:00 am to 1:00 pm – 4 continuing education units*


Using HIV case examples, this workshop outlines an ethical decision making process that participants can apply to their own clinical work. Use of this model raises the standard of practice, and provides psychotherapists with a defensible mechanism to engage when faced with difficult choices across a wide range of clinical issues and situations.


Dr. Berkey is the Director of the Sexual Orientation and Gender Institute @ Center on Halsted. He previously served as the Director of Behavioral Health and Social Services at Howard Brown Health Center for six years. Dr. Williams is a psychotherapist in the HIV Care Program at Michael Reese Hospital. She is also the founder of Williams and Associates, a training and consultation firm.


This program was created by the American Psychological Association. The presenters completed the train-the-trainer course on this ethics model in Washington, D.C. this past November. To learn more about go to the APA HOPE program go here

Couples Therapy: Applications of the Gottman Method

Presented by Michael A. McNulty, Ph.D.


Fridays, March 14th and 21st

9:00 am to 5:00 pm both days – 14 continuing education units*


With over twenty-five years of research behind it, the highly acclaimed Gottman Method of Relationship Therapy has developed a strong following amongst marital therapists. This seminar will provide a review of the Gottmans' Sound Relationship House Theory, seven principles that make relationships work. Participants will learn how to apply the model to their clinical practice, with case material demonstrating its use with a variety of same-sex couples.


Workshop participants will receive the 550 page Clinician’s Workshop Manual, as well as a certificate of completion, from the Gottman Institute. For those interested in pursuing Gottman certification, this 2-day workshop fulfills the level 1 requirement.


Dr. McNulty is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in private clinical practice in Evanston and Highland Park. He is a certified Gottman Relationship Therapist, Gottman Couples Workshop Presenter, and consultant for The Gottman Institute's Professional Development Program. Dr. McNulty is an adjunct faculty member of The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. He is a graduate of The Institute for Clinical Social Work in Chicago.
