"Kevin's Room - together" premieres at a screening this Monday!
Keith Butler, pictured above, plays "Kevin" in Kevin's Room. This is what he had to say to LifeLube about playing the role, and the impact of this film trilogy.
I enjoy playing the role of Kevin in Kevin's Room because Kevin and I are much alike. Kevin is always trying to figure out how to share information that could be useful and is always looking to educate. Kevin, just like myself, has had to educate friends and family about being gay and the effects of HIV on the African-American community."Kevin's Room - together" premieres in Chicago at Reeling 26 - The Chicago Lesbian and Gay International Film Festival this Monday, November 12 at the beautiful Center on Halsted.
My mother has come a long way in opening up to listen to what life really is like for me as a gay male --this has greatly inparted to the role of Kevin. She was able to see me at my best but also see the same conversations that she and I have wanted to have but were afraid to. After watching the first two Kevin's Rooms , my mother is more accepting and respectful and she, just like "Martha", no longer use terms that are politically incorrect.
As long as I live, this film will have a deep place in my heart and I will continue to stress how important it is not only to the Chicagoland area but all across the country. If no one ever says to me again that they recognize me or that they saw the film, that will be just fine but I will never forget the comment made to me by a heterosexual African-American man after seeing Kevin's Room 1. He saw me at a local establishment and came over to me and said, "My wife and I saw Kevin's Room last night and afterwards we had a great conversation."
Kevin's Room is the tool that has gotten us, African-Americans(both gay and straight) to talk about the things we did not want to talk about. And in talking, lives are saved.
