One very easy way to incorporate sex into your overall eco-friendly lifestyle is to purchase an organic, non-petroleum lubricant. A:Thank you for your question! Greener sex is a definite possibility, and the market for eco-condoms and toys is steadily expanding.

There is currently no way to recycle or compost latex or polyurethane condoms. All condoms are intended for one-time use, and any condoms (even unused, unopened ones) or sex toys you toss into your normal recycling bin will be sorted into the trash at your local recycling plant. Unfortunately, conventional latex and polyurethane condoms are only semi-biodegradable and non-biodegradable, respectively. However, even if you can’t recycle or compost conventional condoms and sex toys, there are lots of sustainable sex materials on the market that you can buy instead!

Glyde condoms are vegan, come in assorted flavors, feel thinner than most conventional condoms, and are actually recommended by PETA. Eco-friendly companies like Lelo and CoCo de Mer make their toys exclusively out of sustainable and/or recyclable materials like glass, metal, hard plastics, and elastomers. There are lots of green and affordable vibrators that run on rechargeable batteries and/or solar panels – take the Acuvibe  and the Sola  for example. Earth Erotics  makes whips out of recycled inner tubes for eco-friendly S&M play, as well as non-toxic, non-PVC dildos, butt plugs, and cock rings.

If you pack a vibrator, don't get shaken by TSA

Even in these jittery times, can any air traveler be expected to part willingly with his precious electronic devices?

And not just devices that play music or games. But devices that play. Or, to put it another way, devices that jitter.

Those devices.

The Transportation Safety Administration, whose job it is to consider fully such matters, has decreed that vibrators are OK. The TSA says whips, chains, leashes, restraints and manacles are OK, too. Any law-abiding citizen has the right to carry any such device onto an airplane.

So why are so many otherwise sensible travelers reluctant to do so? Why is there embarrassment and shame, hemming and hawing? It's all so unnecessary, say experts, because traveling with an electric vibrator need be no more difficult than traveling with other problematic items, such as aerosols or toddlers.

Being nervous is counterproductive. Inspectors are trained to spot nervous passengers, resulting in extra scrutiny and more nervousness.

TSA  spokesman Nico Melendez said passengers could save time with a little common sense. Inspectors are doing their job. They are trained professionals and they know a vibrator when they see one. They will not confiscate a vibrator. But they are trained to pay attention to electronic devices.

"Inspectors inspect," he said. "If you don't want us to see it, don't bring it."

Carol Queen, the celebrated San Francisco sex expert, lecturer and proprietor of the Good Vibrations chain of sex stores, has traveled the world with her carry-on bags full of vibrators and other paraphernalia. Vibrators, she says, are not the problem. Shame about vibrators is the problem.

"There's no reason to be embarrassed," said Queen. "If an inspector asks you about it, look him in the eye and tell him it's your vibrator."

Answer: Thank you so much for your question about cleaning your dildos. It's an important question for those of us who love our toys! Let me take care of the "easy" part first. Thanks to our friends at www.mypleasure.com and www.babeland.com, here's a breakdown of how to clean sex toys by material:

* Silicone: Hypoallergenic and easiest to maintain, silicone dildos and non-battery-operated toys may be boiled for two to three minutes, or washed with soap and water. NEVER boil silicone sex toys with electrical components. Let them air dry completely or dry with a lint-free cloth before storing.

* Plastic/Acrylic/Glass: All can be washed with warm water and anti-bacterial hand soap and sterilized using an alcohol-soaked cotton ball (rinse thoroughly afterward); acrylic and glass toys may be boiled or submerged in hot water if they're not battery-operated.

* Rubber/Latex and Jelly: These products are extremely porous, so be sure to wash them thoroughly with warm water and anti-bacterial hand soap, and rinse so that no trace of soap is left, as it can degrade the material and cause irritation to you. Again, while it's a good idea to use a condom with any insertable toys, it's an especially good idea with these materials.

* Realistics: Names include CyberskinTM, FuturoticTM, NeoSkin®, Soft TouchTM, UltraSkin, and FauxskinTM (if you're unsure of the type of material, check the packaging or product page, or contact Customer Service), and this type of material is widely used for erection rings and masturbation sleeves, as well as vibrators and dildos. Thoroughly wash with warm (never hot) water and a liquid antibacterial soap, then let air dry completely. Once dry, sprinkle with the included "renewing" powder or cornstarch. Never use talcum powder or baby powder, as these can cause irritation and sometimes larger problems for women (pure talc is fine but very difficult to find).
