Fabu Crystal Meth Campaign from Tweaker.org

So, thjere are a lot of social marketing campaigns targeting gay men and the use/abuse of crystal meth. There are few that are any good --- in my humble opinion.

However... the new campaign courtesy of the lovelies over at Tweaker.org featuring porn starlets is GREAT --- sex positive, sexy and not preachy, not based on fear/judgement/hysteria,with no fingers a-waggin'...

Imagine!

Just hot morsels reminding us that sex is FANTASTIC sans-a-bump.

I think I believe them.

I don't even have a VCR, let alone a DVD --- I think the last porn I rented starred Rick Donovan :) --- and yet this poster of the current crop manages to hold my attention...

Happy Friday

Shameless self-promotion for LGBTI Health Summit

Just another day at the zoo....

Which has nothing to do with this post...

So, back to the regularly scheduled program, if you are coming to LGBTI in Philly (see previous post), or are thinking about it, please come to the stuff I am doing! Link to the Summit is here. Below is info on a Pre-institute I am involved in on ADVOCACY that happens the day before the Summit starts, on Wed, March 14 (no extra cost) and below that blurb is a little thingie on a workshop I am doing with this other Jim from Fenway in Boston (which is going to be SEXY and FUN.)

------------------------------

Charm School for Activists: How to Effectively Advocate for Your LGBTI Issue (Wednesday March 14th all day)
Facilitators: Lei Chou (C.H.A.M.P.), Jim Pickett (AIDS Foundation of Chicago), and Chris Bartlett (Philadelphia)

The LGBTI health movement has developed numerous campaigns and strategies to move our agenda forward. In this Institute, you’ll work with national health advocacy leaders to see how best to mobilize the media, build a base of support you’re your issues, develop leadership, and identify the key issues to highlight. We will identify a number of key LGBTI health issues as examples, and spend time developing an advocacy strategy around each one.

Revolutionizing Sex in the New Millennium (Thursday, March 15 at 11am - 12:30pm)

with Jim Maynard & Jim Pickett

Jim Pickett is the Director of Public Policy for the AIDS Foundation of Chicago, and is the chair of the International Rectal Microbicide Working Group, made up of nearly 400 advocates and scientists from 35 countries on 5 continents. Jim Maynard oversees the HIV Prevention and Education programs at the Fenway Institute in Boston as well as recruitment for HIV Vaccine Trials and other cutting edge prevention research.

Twenty six years into the AIDS pandemic, our prevention tool boxes are rather sparse, with little more than the ABC’s in them. But despair is not the answer, as there are a host of new, progressive prevention technologies being researched at this very moment. How about a “super lube” that protects against HIV? Or a pill a day to keep it away? And, hey, is there a vaccine on the horizon or what? We deserve, and must demand, more prevention options for ourselves and those we love, or lust for. In this dynamic session, the Jims will discuss rectal microbicide research, pre-exposure prophylaxis, and the latest on the vaccine front, offering concrete ways to become involved in these critical endeavors. They will also confront the tough questions wrapped up in sex, drugs, and cutting edge prevention in this not-to-be-missed workshop for the future of sex.

Why kind of LUBES do YOU use for ANAL SEX?

Hey there ---

On the homepage of LifeLube there is a link to a survey on the topic of lubricants used for anal sex. I hope you will take a few hot seconds of your day and fill it out, and pass it on to others.

The survey, which is being circulated by the International Rectal Microbicide Working Group, is collecting info on the types of lubes people use, whether top or bottom, with or without condoms, that will be very helpful to scientists who are doing safety studies on over the counter sexual lubricants.

Over the counter sexual lubricants do not need to be tested for safety, nor do their makers even need to divulge the ingredients. Research that will be disseminated soon --- pay attention to this blog and to LifeLube --- indicates that some lubes commonly used for anal sex are not as safe as others. This is concerning to many folks, including me, who do gay men's health work, as well as folks who work with women who engage in anal intercourse.

Most of us never really think about safety issues when we are at the Walgreens or our local sex shop, looking for our lube. We look at how slick it is, whether it has an aroma or gets hot or whatever, but we really don't think --- hmmmm, I wonder if this is safe for my booty?

By participating in the study, you will be helping scientists prioritize the next round of over the counter sexual lubricants that need to be tested. You will also be helping provide important acceptability data to the folks working on developing a safe and effective rectal microbicide.

Please do the survey today! And forward it to all of your boy toys too!

We heart NY

NYC has branded it's own condoms and they are adorable in a very Metro sort of way. Doncha think? Here's a link to a story on Kaiser.

Too bad the maker of these cuties --- Lifestyle condoms (Ansell) --- still put nonoxynol 9 in a number of their condom brands. N-9 is not so good for the booty, as we know, and not all that great for the vagina either. This spermicide is IRRITATING and can actually increase the risk of HIV transmission. And as for its spermicide qualities --- not really necessary when the condom is used correctly.

Now we are SURE NYC is not distributing N-9 condoms (right?), but still, too bad this big chunk of business ($1.57 mil) did not go to a maker of condoms who has voluntarily removed N-9 from all their products - like Durex.

LifeLube is birthed!

Wow.

The LifeLube baby has been birthed.....

And it has been a long, long, long, sometimes painful, neverending slog, lemme tell ya. I am too tired to celebrate, though I did have a margarita last night as a special treat to myself.... Coffee has been a good friend over the last week...

Now, I fully realize that launching LifeLube.org and this delightful (let's hope) little blog is really not that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things ---- how many billions and billions of websites and blogs are on the web already? HELLO! Two year olds have their own blogs and webcams... But like proud parents everywhere, or lovers gazing into each others' eyes, this is STILL a really big, thrilling thing when it happens to you, and is exciting for the rest of us who have labored over this project for more eons than I care to recount.

I am going to cut and paste the press release that describes LifeLube and the new national collaboration called SHX at the end of this inaugural blog post for your info.

But I don't want to rely on canned messages like that for this space. I hope to have a dialogue - with you - about gay men's health issues that goes above, beyond and below the navel to knee, disease/pathology syndrome... It is this narrow focus that continues to plague the overall discussion we have with ourselves about gay men's health. The larger society does the same.

So, let's not forget that STDs and HIV are of concern to us, but they AINT THE ONLY THINGS that matter. Hoping this space (and the website) can offer more holistic insights of benefit to us all. Also hope we can have good, solid debate about the issues that confront us.

Who am I? A gay man, one of the founders of LifeLube, just turned 41, HIV-positive for the last, um, 12 years, was obsessed as a child with plastic food, chasing birds in the all-together, Cher and a stuffed bear I called Po Po Chi Chi, healthy except for the occasional cold, love to run (three marathons), been around the block, and the way more than a few times but got a muy wonderful boyfriend now am a bit OCD and ADD and neurotic, talk too loud sometimes, trend to vulgarity and coarseness, cry at the movies and at commercials and NPR once in a while, work for the AIDS Foundation of Chicago, live by the lake, love Spain, and am especially passionate about gay men's health issues, broadly interpreted. Particularly LOVE the issue of new prevention technologies, such as rectal microbicides, that would give us more options than the condom to protect ourselves from STDs and HIV. Check out the International Rectal Microbicide Working Group if you want more info on that note. And ya know ya do...

Others may be joining me as authors on this blog. They will intro themselves when they show up.

Hope you will engage with me/us in an ongoing and lively discussion of the things that matter to you and other gay/bi and other dudes who get it on with dudes... Let's talk about sex and drugs and booze, spirituality and communication issues and asking for what you want, mental health, physical health, physical fitness, politics, culture, whatevah.... Challenge me/us. The comments section is open and unmoderated....

For now, chow bellas!

AIDS ORGANIZATIONS LAUNCH LIFELUBE.ORG ON VALENTINE’S DAY

Website a Project of Sexual Health Xchange for Gay Men

On Valentine’s Day, three of the nation’s leading AIDS organizations will launch LifeLube.org, a website that celebrates and promotes gay men’s sexual health. The website is the inaugural project of the Sexual Health Xchange, a national partnership of AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts, AIDS Foundation of Chicago and AIDS Project Los Angeles.

“Launching the website on Valentine’s Day makes perfect sense since gay sexual health is often reduced to fighting sexually transmitted diseases. We want to send the message to gay men that sexual health is so much more than knowing your HIV status,” said Jim Pickett, policy director of AIDS Foundation of Chicago. “Celebrating our connections and supporting our relationships is what LifeLube.org is all about.”

LifeLube.org provides candid and comprehensive information on sexual health, STD/HIV prevention and care resources, along with explorations of intimacy, communication, spirituality, and other topics of interest to gay men and other men who have sex with men (MSM). The site features interactive blogs and surveys, fresh content written by field experts and links to the Internet’s best sites, articles, and resources on gay sexuality. Sexual health events taking place across the country will also be promoted.

“LifeLube fills a gap by offering dynamic and comprehensive sexual health information for gay men across the country,” said Dr. George Ayala, director of education at AIDS Project Los Angeles. “As we move forward, this collaboration will allow us to tap national talent and resources to continue conversations about the sexual health needs of gay men.”

The Sexual Health Xchange (SHX) is a project of the AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts, AIDS Foundation of Chicago and AIDS Project Los Angeles. SHX will develop and promote up-to-date, accessible information about sexual health and new HIV prevention technologies for gay men, while helping to build grassroots networks of gay men and other MSM of color across the country and advocating for policy and research that expands the range of HIV prevention options currently available to them.

-more-

“Our organizations have from their inceptions supported gay men and other men who have sex with men in their efforts to end HIV/AIDS, so it makes sense for us to join forces to make the broadest impact that we can,” said Michael Shankle, Director, MALE Center, a program of AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts. “This approach addresses all parts of our lives that make us who we are, to erase stigma and to embrace ways for gay men to lead the healthiest, fullest lives possible.”

Along with the ongoing development of health education materials such as LifeLube.org, SHX will pursue community-based sexual health and HIV research, and will engage experts and activists in a “think tank” to address persistent disparities in rates of sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV, among gay men of color.

About the Sexual Health Exchange

AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts (AAC), AIDS Foundation Chicago (AFC), and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA), three of the largest and oldest AIDS organizations in the United States, have partnered to launch the Sexual Health Exchange (SHX). SHX’s collaborative mission is to raise public awareness about the sexual health needs of all gay men and other men who have sex with men and to expand the range of sexual health education options available to gay men, especially gay men of color. The name SHX was strategically selected to situate HIV/AIDS within a broader sexual health agenda. SHX embraces a coalition approach as the optimal way to address the cross-cutting social issues underlying persistent health disparities affecting gay men and other men who have sex with men. In this regard, SHX will strive to intensify an exchange of ideas and resources among individuals and allied organizations, and to expand opportunities for grassroots participation in the promotion of gay men’s sexual health as a human rights issue. In doing so, SHX hopes to unite gay men in the desire to have healthy and satisfying sex lives.
